comfort women - taiwan

the colonial rule of taiwan by the imperial japan began in 1895 after sino-japanese war (1894).  during the asia-pacific war between 1931 and 1945 many peoples in taiwan were forcibly mobilized as labor forces and recruited for various kinds of military services, along with being exposed to discrimination by japanese. under the situation many women in taiwan were also enslaved as “comfort women” like other women throughout asia where japan invaded and occupied by sending its military troops. survivors in taiwan I captured in this photographic works demonstrated speaking  japanese fluently before me.  It gave me a chance to experience forced cultural assimilation by colonial rule simultaneously. wounds caused by deprivation of culture is not able to be healed as briefly as by the sexual enslavement towards the women.
